MEDICINAL BEE GARDENS (PART TWO)
Welcome to part two of my article on Designing and planting Medicinal Bee Gardens. You can read the first half of the article here.
In case you are wondering, that is me in the bees suit. I love me some bees!
Even if you are not a beekeeper, I hope this article will help inspire you to grow plants that support the health and access to nectar flow for the bees. Please do share this post so that others might be inspired too.
Types of Medicinal Herbs
Perennials die back each fall but return the following spring and will last for many years, if properly cared for. Lemon balm, Yarrow and Oregano are examples of perennial medicinal plants that bees like.
Annuals only last for the season and do not come back the following years. Sunflowers, Bachelor’s Buttons and Borage are examples of annual herbs that bees like.
Biennials are not quite as permanent as perennials. Many biennials re-seed themselves, becoming comparable in performance to perennials. Biennial seeds that are planted one year will not flower until the following year. Angelica, Clary Sage and some Poppies are biennials. Many people think of Hollyhock as a perennial as it self-sows easily.
