Common Causes of Adult Acne
What Everyone Should Know About Adult Acne Pt. 2
Lots of People Have Adult Acne
Even if you didn’t have acne as a teen, you may be dealing with it as an adult. Although this is probably frustrating to you, it might help to know that more than 30 million people are suffering from adult acne.
Women Break out More Than Men
It’s true, thanks to women’s shifts in hormones throughout life–thank you puberty, pregnancy and menopause as if hot flashes and morning sickness weren’t enough. Fluctuating hormones trigger oil production.
Hormonal Acne
In adults, the areas that seem to have the most active acne are the jaw, chin, neck and chest. The chin is related to hormones. This area of your skin is very sensitive to rises in progesterone and testosterone. Breakouts in this area can be minor or severely painful. If you are still having painful acne after trying a good skin care regime and being consistent in your use of the products then it may be time to see a healthcare provider to have your hormone levels checked.
Stress Related Acne
Stress effects acne in several ways. Stress can keep a person up all night, robbing them from the sleep they need to heal and strengthen their body. In addition, although researchers are not sure how stress effects oil glands, they do know that there are stress receptors in those glands and that when they are triggered those glands will upregulate and make excess oil. This oil clogs hair follicles and causes acne. To add to an already frustrating situation, stress can activate anxiety and cause people to pick at their skin, making the situation worse. Check out how laughter and gratitude can help reduce stress.
In short, if you are suffering from adult acne, you might want to consider these causes and take action to prevent them from keeping you from having the healthy and radiant skin you deserve!
