When we say we are a small family farm, we mean it. We do not own thousands or even hundreds of acres. We have just enough land to grow ingredients for SongCroft Naturals products, our family food and to enjoy. People are often surprised at how small our place is yet how extremely productive it is. This is because we use intensive growing methods along with permacultulture. We work with nature rather than against it and we flow with the rhythms of the seasons.
We built our home from our own plans and with our own hands. It is a beautiful home made from mostly local materials and is extremely energy efficient. We have spent a lot of time in the community trying to help other people learn about energy reducing options such as passive solar design, solar hotwater and super insulating thier homes. We really do walk our talk.
Like many family farms, we have a value-added product and while somewhat unconventional, SongCroft Naturals is to us what eggs and produce boxes are to other small farmers. Marilene used to work on a traditional Community Supported Agriculture Farm, CSA, where folks bought farm shares every season and in return they got weekly boxes of seasonal produce and occassionally other items like bread created by local artisan makers. The farm chose the products from what was ready to harvest and the shareholder didn’t really get a say in what was in the box. This relationship of community members buying farm shares helped to support the farm and allow them to have the seed money to buy and plan for the next season. The shareholders got fresh produce and felt good about saving farmland and supporting a farmer. It was a beautiful thing.
This relationship is really not all that different from the Subscription Box program SongCroft Naturals offers. When you purchase a subscription to our program, we are empowered to plan for our farm year. This is a blessing as well as a necessity.
An added benefit, with our program you get to choose which products you have shipped so you get what you will actually use and you still get to help save farmland and help out a family farm. Again, it’s a beautiful thing!
Sign up for the Subscrition Box Here. It just makes sense.
What can I say? I’m excited about all of the changes happening around SongCroft Farm and with SongCroft Naturals.
With the launch of this new website, you will know what’s happening on our land and in our business.
Yes, that’s right, we will be blogging about both. Our intention is to bring you information on our amazing products as sales, what’s happening in the industry and world of natural beauty as well as to take time to give recipes and instructional information to those who are passionate about our family farm and permaculture processes.
If our blog isn’t enough for you, you can join our newsletter (top right corner of the page), follow us on Twitter , Instagram (fun photos!) and Pintrest (lots of great ideas for inspiration and DIY). We would love to see your interestes and to share ours.
In addition to new ways to stay in touch, we are also releasing new programs and while they are still in the development stages, we would love to hear your feedback. Subscription Boxes are one of the awesome changes coming down the pike. Customers are telling us that they would like to be able to have products sent to them on a regular basis so that they don’t have to remember to order them. We are designing this program to the desires of our customers. Also, expect a customer survey to come your way soon, if you get our newsletter. There will be a gift for participating because we honor your time and thought that goes in to filling it out. Your feedback will help us meet your needs even better.
We appreciate you and welcome new beginnings in the new year.
As I sit outside on this February evening, it strikes me as unusually warm. In the darkness, I can hear the gushing sounds of the wind as the trees bow in submission. It is likely we will lose power as we have many times before.
I am thankful that we have felled some old alders and other trees that would have likely come crashing down on a night like tonight, they would have chosen their own landing spots instead of us taking them down safely.
This sound, the swoosh of the wind and the crackling of branches are some of the many songs our family farm sings to us.
This bring me to the story of how SongCroft Farm got it’s name. It was a beautiful summer night and the moon was shining high. As I sat around the fire with a group of close female friends, I spoke about how I needed a name that was befitting of our farm. A name that spoke to the rhythm of the seasons and our connection to it. My friend, Lea Anne, asked me to describe the seasons on the land. I spoke of the song it brings us with snow sliding off a cedar branch in the stillness of January and how the wind howls and brings a ethereal roar through the trees in the fall and late winter. I spoke of the song of the Winter Wrens and the cry of the Kestrels and the Red Robin in Spring and summer. I spoke of the song of the seasons and that is how our farm was named. A croft is a family farm, often with small livestock, orchards and vegetable gardens. SongCroft was a natural name.
I hope you too can expereince a connection with nature, somewhere, in your life. Whether it is your backyard, a city park or a National Forest, life is richer with the connection to life outside ourselves.
How fortunate we are to live here.
Blessings from SongCroft Farm.

Last night I got a phone call.
It was a new customer who had just received her first order. I was little taken aback when she asked for me by name and then said, “I am totally blown away.” She went on to say that she was totally blown away by our “Excellent customer service!” Read More

We know will be interested in our give-away offers and reviews because they are all geared to people who are interested in living healthy lives, staying in good shape and supporting ethical businesses. Hey, that’s you!
We hope you will remember to join us here the first Friday of each month!
Let me start by saying that I like to know what goes in my mouth. I am concerned about toothpaste that sparkles, is blue and tastes like candy. I do not want sodium lauryl sulfate or any other hazardous chemicals in the mouth of anyone I love, that’s pretty much everyone. As such, I am very picky about toothpaste.
It must be safe, taste decent, not be too gritty (I don’t want to scratch my enamel), freshen my breath and help fight plaque. While there are some toothpastes out there that are okay, Auromere Ayurvedic Toothpaste is excellent!
I am a life-long student of Ayurveda and am convinced that there is much to me gained by following the more than 3,000-year-old health practices.
My family has used Auromere Ayurvedic Toothpaste on and off for a few years. When we are not using Auromere, we are either using something I whip up in my studio or one other brand that I hope to cover in a future post.
What is special about Auromere Ayurvedic Toothpaste?
Well, first of all, they use 26 botanical extracts and essential oils that are prized for their astringent, antiseptic, purifying and analgesic properties, which prevent plaque and tartar formation. This helps to ward off cavities, sooth gum inflammation and leave your breath fresh.
Their formulas are fluoride-free, have no artificial sweeteners colorants, bleaches, animal ingredients or artificial preservatives. Their standards of what goes in their products are very much in alignment with what we put in SongCroft Naturals products.
My children and husband like the toothpaste too. There are several different flavors, each with benefits. Mint-Free is safe, as it does not counteract homeopathic remedies. This is an important factor for healthcare providers and patients to note.
Non-Foaming is my favorite as it is slightly flavored with cardamom and fennel. My kids like Fresh Mint best but will use any of them. It is nice that the mint is not too spicy as some minty toothpastes are. Licorice is an interesting flavor and I have used it in the past. I like the flavor but my children do not like it as much. One of the things I appreciate about Auromere toothpaste is that it is not so sweet that my teeth feel dirty after using it. I have had that feeling when I used the more conventional toothpastes. The products are also concentrated so although they cost more than conventional toothpastes, you don’t need as much so they really are about the same in terms of dollars spent. But when you consider that they do not contain the unhealthy ingredients and even have beneficial ingredients, I think we come out way ahead when we use Auromere Ayurvedic Toothpaste.
As a special thank you to our customers, Auromere is offering free trial-size samples. Visit their site and mention that you heard of them from the Songcroft Naturals Blog. They will send you a sample. Please request one specific product. If you like it, they would appreciate you liking them on their Facebook page or writing a review.
Oh, and one lucky person will get a full sized tube sent to them! The winner will be chosen at random from those who share our Facebook page telling others about why they like our company, share this blog link on their Facebook page and who likes Auromere’s Facebook page. You have to be in the continental U.S.
Good luck to those who participate!
Don’t forget that we will be doing a give-away the first Friday of next month!
If you have a product you would like us to consider doing a review of or offer as a give-away item, please contact us via email email@example.com. Thank you!
What Everyone Should Know About Adult Acne Pt. 2
Lots of People Have Adult Acne
Even if you didn’t have acne as a teen, you may be dealing with it as an adult. Although this is probably frustrating to you, it might help to know that more than 30 million people are suffering from adult acne.
Women Break out More Than Men
It’s true, thanks to women’s shifts in hormones throughout life–thank you puberty, pregnancy and menopause as if hot flashes and morning sickness weren’t enough. Fluctuating hormones trigger oil production.
In adults, the areas that seem to have the most active acne are the jaw, chin, neck and chest. The chin is related to hormones. This area of your skin is very sensitive to rises in progesterone and testosterone. Breakouts in this area can be minor or severely painful. If you are still having painful acne after trying a good skin care regime and being consistent in your use of the products then it may be time to see a healthcare provider to have your hormone levels checked.
Stress Related Acne
Stress effects acne in several ways. Stress can keep a person up all night, robbing them from the sleep they need to heal and strengthen their body. In addition, although researchers are not sure how stress effects oil glands, they do know that there are stress receptors in those glands and that when they are triggered those glands will upregulate and make excess oil. This oil clogs hair follicles and causes acne. To add to an already frustrating situation, stress can activate anxiety and cause people to pick at their skin, making the situation worse. Check out how laughter and gratitude can help reduce stress.
In short, if you are suffering from adult acne, you might want to consider these causes and take action to prevent them from keeping you from having the healthy and radiant skin you deserve!
Stay tuned for the rest of the articles in this series as we will cover other causes of acne, acne prevention, acne products and lifestyle tips to help those who suffer from acne.
What Everyone Should Know About Acne Pt.1
What is Acne?
Acne is a skin condition that occurs when oil-secreting glands, the sebaceous glands, in the skin are clogged and become inflamed or infected. It can occur during your teen years or as an adult. You do not need to have had teen acne to suffer from adult acne.
How does it occur?
Acne is caused by inflammation or infection of the oil glands in the skin and at the base of hairs. When this oil combines with skin cells and other debris it can block pores. Bacteria can grow in these blocked pores and lead to an infection called acne. When the body works to kill the bacteria, whiteheads, blackheads, and pustules form in these areas.
What are the symptoms?
Some acne, also known as pimples, may be painful. In severe cases, cysts (large fluid-filled bumps) may develop under the skin. Some pimples will disappear before a true infection develops, others can develop into serious infections.
We will be discussing the common causes of acne, how to care for acne prone skin, how to reduce rosacea or other redness of the skin and the best products for acne skin care in our series What Everyone Should Know About Adult Acne. Follow our blog for the next article in the series.
You might consider sharing these articles with those you know suffer from acne. Our intention is to shed some light on the topic and give you tools to deal with it so perhaps it will go away.
Fall is showing it’s colors as I write this to you. Our interns have gone their separate ways and it’s just our family here on the farm. It is quiet.
I have been busy preserving the harvest, most of which grows on our farm, but some from local farmers. I have saved bean, carrot, celery, pea, aster, columbine, sunflower, epazote, fennel, calendula, feverfew, chamomile, plantain,
lemonbalm, yarrow seed. I have also harvested rosemary, lavender, rose, plantain, chickweed, comfrey, chili peppers, jasmine, lady’s mantle and a lot of other herbs. Also in the garden we have had a fall bounty of tomatoes, beans, potatoes, squash, peas, lettuce, greens of all kinds, apples, raspberries, strawberries, cucumbers and ground cherries. All of this harvesting has my pantry full of preserves and herbal preparations e the shelves in my work studio. Some of the products and preparations I make now wont be ready for a few months as the processes take time, patience and specific techniques.
This is also the time that I put away the market tent and tables as I don’t do farmers markets once my children’s academic year begins. As much as I love working with the public, giving herbal support to my community, my family will always come first. I love this time of year.
Soon enough, it will be time to attend holiday markets and bazaars. If you have an event you would like us to have a table at, let us know. Our calendar is booking up but there may still be some openings.
I hope your fall is full of warm cups of tea, walks on crisp mornings and good health.
